Francis St. Holder - Martial Arts for Children

Francis St. Holder is the Chief Technology Officer at Information Technology Security and Consulting, Incorporated. Like many professionals, he works hard, and the demands of his career position can be stressful at times. It is important to engage in recreational activities that allow you to regain your balance if you are a busy executive, and martial arts would certainly fit this description. This is an area that he has a great deal of interest in. Penchak silat is a name that has been given to a family of Indonesian martial arts, and this is an area that he specifically focuses on. Different types of actions are involved, including wrestling, delivering blows with the hands and feet, and strategic weapon use. The fact that all of these different approaches are utilized in this school is fitting, because he also enjoys mixed martial arts.

There are benefits to be gained through the practice of martial arts for people of all ages, and children who take up the practice can certainly learn a great deal. Unfortunately, many youngsters are bullied to one degree or another. When you are proficient at martial arts, you will always be able defend yourself if you are attacked. If anything ever happens and you respond effectively, the bullying is very likely to cease. In addition to the fact that you can take action if it ever becomes necessary, you gain a certain sense of self-confidence and peace of mind when you know that you can take care of yourself. This can be very important for younger people, because many children and teenagers have insecurity issues as they try to fit in at school.

Aficionados like Francis St. Holder often talk about the other benefits of martial arts that are subtler than the obvious self defense advantage. When a child decides to take martial arts classes, a comprehensive form education is going to be delivered by the instructor. Watching people in action on television is one thing, but showing up on time for your training when it is scheduled is another. You learn about making a long-term commitment to something that is difficult, but very rewarding if you stay the course.

A student will also obtain the ability to accept coaching from a more experienced mentor, and this is another very valuable lesson to learn that will be helpful in the classroom. Coachable people are also very valuable in the workplace, so the positive impact can have long-term value. Plus, there is the simple matter of physical fitness. Francis St. Holder is passionate about pushing the envelope to stay in shape. When a child is committed to martial arts, there will always be exercise on the agenda, and this helps to make a youngster a healthy, fit, well-rounded individual.

Francis St. Holder - Three Keys to  Sparring in Martial Arts

Francis St. Holder has taken martial arts lessons for several years in his spare time while working as the Chief Technology Officer for Information Technology Security and Consulting Incorporated (ITSCI). He has been in the information technology sector for over twenty years and has been a leader for ITSCI in the Washington, DC area. He loves sparring, especially in Pencak Silat disciplines, his favorite form of martial arts. Sparring is a great way to build muscle and stay in shape while honing his skill in the ring. Here are three keys to sparring in any kind of martial arts discipline:

  • Remain calm and relaxed. This is difficult for beginners because they are often naturally afraid of contact in the beginning. This is totally natural. Nobody likes getting hit. But, if you focus on remaining as calm and relaxed as possible during a sparring session, according to Francis St. Holder, you’ll be able to take contact better and safer.
  • Stick to the basics. Only after you have trained for a long time and can begin to challenge yourself with competitive matches should you try anything in a sparring match beyond jabbing, crossing, hooks, kicks, and other basic moves.
  • Break it up. Split up your sparring matches to focus on a few moves at a time. This is especially useful when learning the many moves of Pencak Silat.

Francis St. Holder has followed these basic tips for sparring and has learned a great deal about the fighting style as a result. He is always ready to learn new moves.

Francis St. Holder -  Technical Surveillance Counter-Measures

Francis St. Holder has worked hard in technical surveillance measures for over twenty years in Washington, DC. He has helped many different companies throughout the area develop better technological security systems so they can protect and use their Information Technology databases better and use their information to help their own clients with better services. St. Holder is interested in the Technical Surveillance Counter-Measures in the US government. He is always in tune with new and developing technologies to help his clients protect their data and secure their communications.

The Technical Surveillance Counter-Measures surveys commissioned by the United States are services provided by certain qualified personnel to help detect technical surveillance devices and hazards and to help identify technical security weaknesses which could aid in the continued conduct of technical penetration of the surveyed facility. Francis St. Holder keeps an eye on how TSCM surveys are conducted and to help him with his job in technical security for local companies in Washington, DC. Usually, professional evaluation of a facility’s technical security consists of thorough visual, physical, and electronic examination in the surveyed facility. This takes a large amount of technical expertise and a high level of technologically advanced equipment to conduct these surveys.

Francis St. Holder is of course not granted high security clearances, but he works hard to learn about surveillance procedures and equipment to help him in his job working with companies and individuals in the Washington, DC area to ensure that their databases are secure and functioning properly.

Francis St. Holder -  Five Interesting  Facts About Dubai

Francis St. Holder has been to Dubai on business several times in his career and is always fascinated by the Gulf city’s culture and geography. St. Holder is the Chief Technology Officer for Information Technology Security and Consulting, Incorporated (ITSCI) and frequently works with people from Dubai to help create new networking solutions for businesses in the Washington, DC area. St. Holder has over twenty years of experience working in Information Technology and continues to find new technologies and solutions for his clients at ITSCI. He looks forward to his next trip to Dubai and has found several interesting facts about the country during his travels there over the years:

  • Dubai’s crime rate is nearly zero percent. In a country composed mostly of immigrants (see below), crime is virtually nonexistent because of the strict Muslim law imposed by the country’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The penalties for even the slightest infraction of the law carry heavy penalties, such as imprisonment or deportation. The police force is extremely well-funded, boasting several Ferraris and Lamborghinis for police cars.
  • Dubai’s population is eighty-three percent immigrants. You’ve probably heard of the massive skyscrapers going up all the time in Dubai. They are built by large populations of workers from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The seventeen percent of the population from the United Arab Emirates have their rent, education, and medical bills paid for. Many foreigners earn huge salaries as nodes of large corporations making money from the oil industry and more.
  • Dubai has a zero debt tolerance policy. Falling into a hole of credit card debt is not an option in Dubai. If you fall into default on loan or because of credit card debt, you can be imprisoned or deported. Many foreigners, attracted by well-paying jobs and tax-free salaries still manage to live above their means and run into trouble with Emirati officials. There are many luxury cars abandoned in parking lots throughout the city by foreigners fleeing back to their home countries.
  • Everything has to be cooled. Everything from air you breathe indoors to the buildings themselves have to be constantly cooled in Dubai. Francis St. Holder is fascinated by a city that survives and thrives in the middle of the desert, with temperatures sometimes rising above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Engineers have to install vertical cooling systems that pump water up and down the sides of buildings to keep them from literally melting.
  • Camel racing is the national sport. Similar to football in America and hockey in Canada, camel racing is extremely popular in Dubai. Unfortunately, children rode the camels, some of them kidnapped and illegally trafficked to the country for years, until the government finally put a stop to it—and replaced children with small robots.

Francis St. Holder loves to visit this fascinating and growing city.

Francis St. Holder - What is IT Networking?

Francis St. Holder is the Chief Technology Officer for Information Technology Security and Consulting Incorporated (ITSCI) in the Washington DC area. He got to this position by working extensively with data networks and helping clients solve their Information Technology business issues quickly and effectively. He has over twenty years of experience in the IT field and works hard to help the company grow and find new clients throughout their target market area. St. Holder manages network engineers and helps them solve problems for clients throughout the Washington, DC area by using his extensive expertise and experience in the management of information systems and in IT networking.

An Information Technology (IT) network can take many different forms for personal and business use. Many businesses use a local area network (LAN) that links all of the computers in an office together and allows all workers to access and use information and files located on the local database and on the computers themselves. Francis St. Holder also helps to set up and manage wide area networks (WAN), corporate intranet with information stored on private servers that can be accessed remotely, normal Internet connections and networks, and virtual private networks (VPN).

Francis St. Holder works with a wide variety of businesses and other clients of varying sizes, which determines the complexity of his work with a given client. St. Holder has worked with small startups, which tend to employ computer engineers to oversee only a few desktop computers to ensure ease of access and workability for a small group of employees. He has also worked with large, multinational companies that need an engineer to help them manage a large web of networks in many different places. IT networking is all about ease of access. Employees can’t do their job well at a company that utilizes the Internet and digital files in any way (which is almost all businesses these days) if they can’t access the Internet and the information located throughout their company network.

St. Holder has the experience to set up complex networks as well as small ones for local businesses in the Washington, DC area. He has created many opportunities for ITSCI to work with new clients in all kinds of industries and markets throughout the area and find new clients to offer services to. IT network engineers are experts in designing easy-to-use networks that their clients can create opportunities with. Throughout his career, he has helped many clients set up their own networks and use them to great effect. He continues to find new clients and help ITSCI create new solutions for as many businesses as possible in the DC area. He lives in Fort Washington, Maryland and was raised in the area.

Francis St. Holder Gives Facts About Martial Arts

In the city of Washington DC, business professional Francis St. Holder also studies martial arts. Over the years, he has found many interesting and fun facts related to the ancient physical and spiritual combat form.

  • Most people associate the methodical fighting techniques of martial arts to be solely a product of areas such as Japan, China, and Korea. However, many of the oldest civilizations, such as the Macedonians and the Spartans also had their own martial or fighting styles that included a code of conduct and spiritual way of life.
  • Karate is defined as a self-defense style that uses no weaponry. The word Karate is a combination of the word te, meaning hand, and kara, which translates to empty.
  • Most martial arts follow a gradual set of belts that are achieved as the fighter becomes more proficient. While each style has its own belting system, the common link between them is that a fighter starts with a white belt and eventually achieves a black belt when they are masters. Many martial arts forms use the color system of white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown, red, and then black.
  • Francis St. Holder sees that many scientists and physicians agree that children with focus issues, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), benefit from martial arts training. The classes they take offer structure that is missing in other areas of their lives, a clear code of conduct with repercussions, and a way to burn off much of that excess energy that is dividing their focus.

Francis St. Holder and Interesting Dubai Facts

One of Francis St. Holder's favorite topics is the city of Dubai. He finds the region fascinating and has accumulated a number of interesting facts about the wealthy nation. Located in the United Arab Emirates, Dubai benefits from its coastal location on the Persian Gulf and proximity to many countries that place value on abundance, wealth, and luxury.

Dubai is considered one of the safest cities in the entire world, and the safest area to visit in the Middle East. The crime rate in the region is nearly non-existent thanks to strict laws and a high moral code shared by the residents.

Unlike the few other areas where the extremely wealthy congregate, Dubai is a city that does not charge income tax. This means that the richest people who call Dubai home do not have to pay taxes that could cost them a large portion of their income and savings. Many people of means flock to Dubai because it is a city that allows them to keep their funds.

As Dubai has grown over the last two decades, so has the infrastructure in the region. With an increasing popularity comes the need for more buildings, homes, and businesses. It is because of this massive construction boom that Dubai is currently home to one-fifth of the total crane machine population in the world. Dubai is a small city when considering square footage, which is why many of the buildings must be higher than normal. Skyscrapers require cranes for safe construction.

Nearly everything is bigger in Dubai. It has developed a reputation for doing things on the largest scales. For example, Dubai has the world's largest aquarium and the world's tallest building. The city is also home to the tallest hotel, the largest shopping mall, and the world's second largest boating marina.

In Dubai, the local Emirates only account for fifteen percent of the total population. The majority of Dubai residents are native to countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and areas of Europe. Dubai also has a large transient population thanks to its desirability as a tourist destination.

Dubai is the city to visit for those with a love for gold. The area is home to the world's longest gold chain, which is more than four kilometers long and weighs twenty-two kilograms. Some of the ATM machines in Dubai also pay out funds in gold bars, known as “gold to go”. Though there are standard ATM machines available that dispense basic cash.

When thinking of the region, Francis St. Holder knows the term “outdoor snow sports” does not often come to mind. Even in the tropical and arid climate of Dubai, it is possible to ski year-round by visiting Ski Dubai's indoor facility at the Dubai Shopping Mall.

Francis St. Holder and Types of Wireless Technologies

Working with wireless technology is an area where Francis St. Holder excels in Washington DC. His role as an Information Technology Executive, as well as his thorough education in the field, has given him great insight into the many new innovations and common applications of wireless systems. The following list explains the most common forms of wireless technology and their uses.

  • Voice communication, such as radio banter, is an old form of wireless technology that is still practiced today. While the ability to communicate between radio waves was a boon when it was first invented, it is now considered somewhat slow and outdated. Since the heyday of the HAM radio and the walkie-talkie, wireless technology has grown immensely. For example, the ever-present cell phone and smart phone is an innovative use of voice communication which allows two or more people to speak to each other in real time from anywhere in the world, without delay.
  • All forms of remote control require wireless technology. These can include common elements such as the remote that controls a television, the fob that unlocks a car's doors, or a garage door opener. Other commonplace remote controls found around the world include wireless doorbells, invisible dog and livestock fences, wireless game console controllers, and programs that allow users to control home electronics from their smart phones. More advanced remote controls are used to control spacecraft in orbit from a space station.
  • Remote measurement is a wireless technology that is growing rapidly in the technology and scientific realm. The use of wireless systems in measurement gives companies an alternative to their existing methods that may be too expensive or time consuming. One such example is the advancements that have been made recently in the metering of residential electricity. In days past, the electric company would have to send a person to each home to read the meter on the house. Now, electric companies are able to remotely read a meter and calculate a bill from that reading without having to physically send an employee to the site.
  • Wireless sensing is a newer form of technology that is promising to deliver great benefits to all users. Wireless sensing is already used in many places, though the technology needed to make these systems work is taken for granted by the standard home-user. Sensors that are attached to a security system can determine if the system is active or disconnected via wireless sensors. Other sensors used in wireless technology allow people to measure the temperature of their home from a remote location.
  • Item tracking through the attachment of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags is an area of wireless technology that Francis St. Holder appreciates. These tags or chips can track anything from a pet to a purchased product.

Francis St. Holder - Professional

Certification

Francis St. Holder attended the University of Maryland at College Park, where he earned a degree in Technical Management. He has spent more than twenty years in the IT industry.

He has been employed by Information Technology Security and Consulting, Inc. for more than fifteen years, and is the company’s Chief Technology Officer. The company provides its clients with complete IT assessment, communications installations, design and support for small to large scale networks, and other services, with a focus on cloud computing and virtualization.

IT Engineers fulfill the needs of users based on usability and function. Typical responsibilities include conceiving and designing new systems based on user need, and testing and troubleshooting different aspects of computer systems, including networks.

IT Engineers usually obtain professional certification beyond their college degrees, and Francis St. Holder is no exception. He has Cisco certifications, one at the associate level and another at the expert level, and he is working toward a third. Certification always looks good on a résumé, and they are seen as an excellent supplement to a bachelor’s degree. Cisco offers a number of different certifications, and additional certifications are offered by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

IT professionals should also have good people skills. Those include the ability to talk to people and get along with colleagues, and the ability to explain technical issues to non-technical people. Managers, for example, don’t need to know all the technical details of an issue, but they do need to now how technical matters can impact the bottom line.

Francis St. Holder makes his home in Fort Washington, Maryland.

Francis St. Holder - Owning a Small Business

Francis St. Holder is a longtime IT professional who has also stepped boldly into the role of small business owner. He bought a used motorcycle dealership in Maryland and re-launched it in May 2015, with some changes aimed at offering the motorcycling community everything that it needs.

He hopes that Clinton Cycles will become a part of the fabric of the community, offering used bikes and complete customizations aimed at both performance and appearance. Other services include washing and detailing, consignment, and registration tags and title processing.

Making a small business succeed requires an enormous amount of work, and there are plenty of hurdles that owners face almost every day. It’s common for people who are not in business for themselves to look at small business owners with a degree of envy, because they work for themselves and can set their own hours. That may be true, but most small business owners say they are working harder than they did when they were working for someone else.

Small business owners are able to control their destinies, up to a point, but there’s a lot of responsibility involved. Small business owners have to do everything from chart the future direction of their company, to take on the role of customer service representative; at times they even need to be the janitor. In short, it requires a lot of different skills. Sometimes they have to learn new skills on the fly: you might be really good, for example, at establishing priorities and putting together a budget, but not know much about selling and negotiating.

Francis St. Holder went into the custom motorcycle business because of a love of motorcycles.

Francis St. Holder - Cisco Certified

Francis St. Holder studied technical management at the University of Maryland College Park, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree. He has spent more than twenty years in the IT and telecommunications industries.

He holds two different Cisco certifications, one at the associate level, and the other at the expert level. And because the IT industry is constantly changing and evolving, he works hard to stay on top of all the latest developments. And even veteran network administrators can benefit from taking refreshers on some of the basics, no matter how long they have been working on computer networks.

Cisco has put together a list of topics that everyone working with Cisco networking systems should know and keep up with. It’s important, for example, to understand the difference between a home router and an enterprise router. A home router is used to connect a home network to the Internet, but they are not able to carry the load necessary to connect a commercial network, even for a midsized business. They don’t have enterprise grade management or troubleshooting features, or the protocols and modules most company networks require.

It’s also important to understand how network traffic works. Everything that is sent via TCP/IP is broken into smaller pieces called packets, and each packet can take a different path from its origin to its receiver. Understanding how this works is important when it comes to troubleshooting.

Administrators also need to know the basics of IP addressing. An IP address uniquely identifies a device on a network. Many server administrators, though, are surprisingly unclear on the details of how IP addressing works.

Francis St. Holder - Wireless Technology

Francis St. Holder is a veteran IT Engineer with more than twenty years of experience. He is a professional in the wireless technology industry who works with his clients to develop their business and design management systems. He also helps them design networks that enable their businesses grow.

Wireless networks have come a long way since they first became available. In their earliest forms, wireless technologies were only good for limited distances, but their range of usability has improved along with the technology itself. Today there are four main lasses of wireless network, based on their range and geographical areas.

  • Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN). A WPAN uses short-range wireless technologies that cover areas of about eleven yards and less. The most common of these technologies is Bluetooth. A new one still in ascent is called ZigBee. These networks link small devices, like cell phones, to computers.
  • Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). WLANs use LAN technologies, and are used for larger areas than a WPAN. A WLAN is good for network connectivity throughout an office, building, or several buildings in a limited geographic area.
  • Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN). A WMAN allows for wireless connections in larger geographical area than a WLAN. Using technologies like WiMAX, they can cover areas of several miles.
  • Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN). A WWAN allows for the largest possible area covered. They use public carriers like cellular networks to communicate.

Francis St. Holder is the Chief Technology Officer and Senior Systems Network Architect Engineer at Information Technology Security and Consulting Inc. He has a degree in Technical Management from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Francis St. Holder -  Corvette History

When Francis St. Holder isn’t working diligently as a business owner or IT Engineer, he can be found engaging in a number of interesting hobbies. One of the things that he has become passionate about are Corvettes. A Corvette is a Chevrolet manufactured car model that was originally designed by Harley Earl, and first introduced in 1953 strictly as a concept show car.

The name Corvette actually was once used to describe a small, maneuverable warship. Though the Corvette started strictly as a concept car, the popularity if the model would make it destined for mass production. By 1954, 3,640 convertible Corvettes were built in the colors Sportsman Red, Black, Polo White, and Pennant Blue.

The Corvettes of today look distinctly different from the models of the late 50s and early 60s. However, one thing has always remained the same. The Corvette was a car that was built for the sake of luxury and performance. The second generation of Corvettes would include the well-known Sting Ray model. This car was smaller than the first generation, with fiberglass body panels that made it lighter and sleeker. Each new generation of Corvettes would develop more powerful and efficient motors, lighter frames, and more aerodynamic designs that would continue to push the envelope on performance, style, and luxury.

Francis St. Holder is a Corvette enthusiast that has always found the history of the model interesting. That is why when he is not busy managing his businesses, you can likely find him browsing various Corvette models, both new, and old.

Francis St. Holder - Fort Washington, Maryland

Francis St. Holder is a successful IT engineer who lives in Fort Washington, Maryland. He has worked in the IT field for over 20 years helping individuals and companies incorporate cutting edge technology into daily life. Although he was born in Durham, North Carolina, he grew up and still lives in the Washington D.C. area. Francis St. Holder enjoys the close proximity to the United States Capital that Fort Washington offers but likes that it isn’t too built up compared to the city.

Fort Washington, Maryland has a population of just over 23,000 people, square footage of 16.6 miles, and borders Washington D.C. on its south side. It is named after Fort Washington, which was completed in 1809.

Fort Washington is a stone structure and served as the only defensive fort to protect young nation’s capital. It also offered a good field range for cannons. During the War of 1812, he fort was captured by the British during an attack and advancement under the command of Admiral Gordon. This happened three days after the capital was burned. A cannon exploded as it was passing the fort on the USS Princeton in 1844.

During the outbreak of the Civil War Isaac Toucey, the Secretary of the Navy ordered a detachment of United States Marines to garrison the fort. However, they were removed from the fort in May of 1856 by Gideon Welles, the Secretary of the Navy at that time.

The fort now serves as part of an extensive park that offers hiking paths and views of the Potomac River. It is popular with families and history buffs for outdoor recreation like fishing and picnicking.

Francis St. Holder likes living near the historic fort that once protected the capital and enjoys its scenic views offered today.

Francis St. Holder - The Early History of the University of Maryland

Francis St. Holder is now a successful IT engineer with many years of experience working for Fortune 500 companies, delivering cutting edge solutions in many aspects of the business. But before he was an engineer, Francis St. Holder had to earn his degree. He chose to study at the University of Maryland College Park where he earned his bachelor’s in Technical Management. UM, as the University of Maryland is commonly known, has a long and rich history dating back to the 1800s when the school was founded.

The University of Maryland was called the Maryland Agricultural College when it was founded on March 6, 1856. The classes began on October 5, 1859 with 34 students enrolled. In July of 1862, during the time the first degrees were being awarded at the school the Morrill Land Grant Act was being signed, which gave federal funds to schools teaching engineering, agriculture or providing military training. The Maryland Agricultural College took advantage of this grant as soon as it was available in the state, receiving federal money in 1864.

During the Civil War, the school ran into financial trouble, causing the administrators to sell off 200 acres. This could not keep the school from bankruptcy however and for the next two years the campus was used for a boys’ preparatory school. In 1866 after the war was over, the Maryland legislature assumed half ownership of the school, getting it out of bankruptcy. The school was reopened in October of 1867 with only 11 students. However, admission continued to grow over the next years and the school’s debt was finally paid off in 1873.

Francis St. Holder learned about the history of the University of Maryland while attending school there.

The second step is work on your knowledge of business. It is important to be skilled in IT, but a basic understanding of business practices will help you advance your career even further. If your client is a large organization or business, understanding their needs will help your serve them better, and earn recommendations.

The third step is to learn from those around you. When you start with a new company, there will most likely be senior IT engineers on staff as well.
